I don’t know about you, but I know that I’m a huge Marvel fan! (And Star Wars too!) And the new Marvel series, Wandavision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and Loki just got me even more into Marvel!
And that gave me the idea of creating the winter soldier book for myself!
In today's article, I will guide you through how I made a winter soldier fabric book cover. Follow along with this project and share your result in Lizzsews Facebook group.
What I used:
- Printer + paper
- Black twill fabric
- Red cotton fabric
- Notebook (mine was about 7” x 5”)
- Rotary cutter and self-healing cutting mat
- Sewing machine + supplies
How I made:
To start, I came up with a basic idea of what I wanted, what I was looking for.
I decided that I wanted a tightly fitting book cover that fit as if it was the cover of the book. And I wanted it to resemble the book from marvel.
I started by creating a basic book cover design with the size of 10” x 29”, it ended up being very large.
Here’s what I did for the basic book cover:
I took the strip of fabric and folded in the short side two times, both sides and sewed along the edge.
I then folded each side towards the middle with a gap in the middle of under 3”
1” down from the top I marked along lengthwise, except for the gap in the middle. I did the same on the bottom.
I then flipped it inside out and it was complete!
I placed the book inside the book cover to see that it was larger than the notebook, which was expected.
I cut out the middle strip of the book cover and left just 1 1/8” total in the middle.
I then sewed the two sides together with the outsides facing each other. And ironed the seam.
After that, I flipped the book cover inside out and placed the notebook just a little bit underneath the top stitch line and created a line just under the bottom of the notebook along the entire bottom except for the gap in the middle.
The next step was to sew along the lines that I created, making sure to not sew in the middles.
I then sized the cover onto the notebook and it seemed to be going well. The middle gap was now perfectly sized and the seam fit well on the side of the book. The height was also great. The length just needed to be fixed.
One thing I did notice though is that as I was placing the cover over the notebook, the front of the notebook was starting to rip a little and was getting very bent.
I cut the excess off of the bottom seam except for the gap in the middle and the corners from the top seam.
Now, to deal with the length, I took the notebook and placed it just near the middle gap and marked it just outside the other side of it. I did this on both sides and ended up taking off about 1” on each side (which doubles to 2” because it’s folded). Sew along the marked lines. And cut off the excess seam.
I sized the notebook inside the book cover for the second to last time to make sure it fit.
Now, the last step was the star. This actually took me multiple different tries to get right.
I took a picture from online of the star from the winter soldier notebook itself and whitened it out mostly everywhere but the star. I printed it out, cut out the star, marked the star shape onto the twill fabric and used a sharpie to trace it onto the backside so that I could then cut it out.
On the second try, I tried to make the star iron-on but it didn't work.
And for the third, the star looked great, and the shape was good, so I decided to hand sew it onto the book cover; twill doesn't fray (as far as I know). I started to hand sew it to where I wanted it on the book cover.
The hard part here was that I could not sew through the two layers or I wouldn’t be able to put the cover on the notebook. While I was hand sewing, I had to ensure the needle did not sew through both layers.
After I hand sewed, I knotted off the thread and placed the notebook inside the book cover.
I was amazed at how great it turned out!
